Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers Workshops
Council runs free workshops for supervisors that are teaching learner drivers. The workshops aim to give supervisors all the practical skills they need to supervise a learner driver and increase their understanding of the licence conditions for learner and provisional drivers.
The workshop covers topics such as; the new licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook, the benefits of on-road driving sessions and tips on supervising a learner driver. The session also reinforces the important role of providing on-going support for young drivers in the early years of driving.
Safer Driver Courses
Narrandera Shire Council is supporting NRMA Safer Driving - Wagga Wagga to provide the Safer Drivers Course locally every six months. Usually Narrandera learners would need to travel to Griffith or Wagga Wagga to complete the course.
The next Safer Drivers Course in Narrandera will be on Thursday 5 October 2023. Course bookings should be made at https://nrma.bookitlive.net/eventbooking/sds
Learner drivers will receive 20 hours of log book credit when they complete the five hour Safer Drivers Course.
The Safer Drivers Course helps young drivers on their L-plates prepare for driving solo when they graduate to provisional licences. To complete the course, you must be on your L-plates, aged under 25 and have completed at least 50 log book hours of driving (including some night driving).
The course consists of two modules. Module 1 is the group discussion with a maximum of twelve learners. Learning is similar to a classroom environment. Module 2 is the in-car practical learning with a qualified driving instructor and another student. The drives are completed in an automatic car provided by NRMA Safer Driving. Module 1 is delivered on Thursday. Participants will have a session for module 2 scheduled on either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
Disadvantaged learners may be eligible to attend the course for free. To apply for a free place you need to complete a Safer Drivers Course Concession Application Form and contact the course provider. This form is available online from Roads & Maritime Services.
