Narrandera Shire Council is committed to the ongoing management of weeds and the risks and impacts they have to our community, environment and economy. To carry out this task we support an extensive Weeds Action Program (WAP). This involves inspections of private property, council managed and owned land, and numerous spray programs throughout the year targeting a range of weeds.
Council is an active member of the Riverina Weeds Action Program (WAP). This program helps develop partnerships to effectively target weeds; identify and stop new weeds early and increase community involvement in weed management.
Biosecurity
On 1 July 2017, The Biosecurity Act 2015 replaced the Noxious Weeds Act 1993. Under the Noxious Weeds Act all landowners had a responsibility to control noxious weeds on their property. Under the Biosecurity Act the same responsibility applies and is known as a General Biosecurity Duty. The Biosecurity Act aims to change the way weeds are managed with a key focus on sharing the responsibility and implementing the concept of risk. Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, Narrandera Shire Council as the Local Control Authority has a legal obligation to manage the biosecurity risk posed or likely to be posed to the environment, economy and the community by priority weeds.
What is a priority weed?
A priority weed or biosecurity matter is a plant that has been assessed and determined to cause serve impact on the environment, economy of agricultural industry and the community.
Obligations & Responsibilities
Every home owner, landowner, occupier or persons(s) leasing or renting property must be aware of their obligations and responsibilities to control priority weeds. The person or persons who has the care, control and use of the land is the occupier. Each occupier who fails without reasonable excuse to take reasonable and effective measures to control priority weeds from their property shall be liable to a penalty fine not exceeding $10,000.
Riverina Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan
The Riverina Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan has been developed by Riverina Regional Weeds Committee with the guidance and consultation from the Riverina LLS, State Weeds Committee and the community. This plan helps identify regional priority weeds and provides management objectives to help ensure we all comply with our General Biosecurity Duty.
Pesticide Use Notification Plan
Narrandera Shire Council has developed its Pesticide Use Notification Plan under requirements of Pesticides Act 1999 and the Pesticides Regulation 2017. The plan sets out how Narrandera Shire Council will notify members of the public regarding the use of pesticide & herbicide application on council owned and managed lands.
Red Guide Post Program
Red Guide Posts are being installed to identify biosecurity risks along our roadsides. The posts alert road users of the site they need to avoid and prevent further spread of priority weeds along high risk pathways.
