Barellan Working Clydesdale Committee
Inspired by Barellan Centenary Parade in 2009 this small committee of local volunteers commit countless hours to prepare, plan, run and participate in this annual event over the past 13 years. After a two-year hiatus during COVID the Barellan “Good Old Days” was back in 2022, bigger and better than before.
Narrandera Little Athletics
Being the only organisation that offers sporting activities to children from three years to 17 years, this volunteer organisation for over 50 years has inspired our local children to attain their best in athletics. Many children have gone on to even greater athletic achievements including both national and state level.
Kurrajong Supported Living
The difference this not-for-profit organisation makes to its clients is best summed up by this statement from one of the nominators. “Without Kurrajong, I would not be living a life of my choice”. With over 20 dedicated staff, they ensure their clients and families not only have access to the support they need but are involved in many community activities.
Narrandera Volunteer Rescue Squad
Over the last 50 years this volunteer squad, giving generously of their time and skills, has remained ready 24/7 to provide all types of rescues and assistance to the people of Narrandera Shire and surrounding areas. This year especially during the extensive floods the community is grateful that ‘they do what they do’ helping the community during times of need.
Environmental Australia Day Award
Nella Smith
Nella is involved in all things environmental in this region and has a passion for the Narrandera community. Being involved in many environmental groups over the years she is currently involved in no fewer than eight organisations.
Lindsay Hayes
Lindsay was one of the founding members of the renewed Koala Regeneration Committee in the mid 80’s and continues the committee being a strong supporter and advocate for preserving and developing the Narrandera Koala Colony. Injured wildlife are brought to Lindsay at all hours of the day to be cared for and rehabilitated often at her own expense.
Young Citizen of the Year
Tahlia Gilbert
Tahlia has been selected as part of the Aboriginal Dance Company to perform in Sydney. She recently participated in the School Spectacular and is a “Learn to Swim” instructor for the local Swim club.
Brooke Hall
Whilst completing her HSC this year, Brooke has been an integral part of the student leadership team. She volunteers her time coaching and umpiring netball for the local team and a school.
Senior Citizen of the Year
Josephine Marks
Over the years Josie has brought her positive empathy to all the organisations she has volunteered with. These include Narrandera Rural Women’s’ Gathering, Narrandera Pre-School Inc. CWA Narrandera Evening Branch and Narrandera Business Group. In her work life she has been a valued employee, first as an Early Childhood educator, Narrandera Out of School Hours Inc., and most recently with TAFE NSW involved in promoting courses and supporting students benefiting the wider community of Narrandera.
John Gerrard
With many years of service in the Armed forces, John has been involved in the local RSL and is an active and valued member of the Rural Fire Service - for much of the time as senior Deputy Captain.
Beverly Hughes
Beverly is the type of person that every committee, organisation or community yearn for, being involved in the Narrandera Garden Club, Soroptimists, Narrandera Race Club, Narrandera Golf Club, Narrandera Pony Club plus many others overtime.
James Knagge
As one of the founding members of Narrandera Shed for Men, Jim has been involved in setting up the shed, forming a committee and executive to run the shed then over the years he has held many positions to continue the Shed’s operation. The community benefits from the activities the Shed’s members perform and James’ contribution to the community is significant’.
Citizen of the Year
Lindsay Hayes
Lindsay works tirelessly in Narrandera with Australia Wildlife by caring for and rehabilitating many native animals such as koalas, kangaroos, and other marsupials. She is a quiet achiever who is well respected by her peers, local vets, and community groups, and was recently recognised by the Wildlife Heroes organisation.
Rex Evans
Despite the demands of running a mixed farming enterprise, Rex has always given generously of his time, resources, and talents for the benefit of others. This includes Narrandera Basketball, Lake Talbot Environs Committee, and various organisations in Grong Grong.
Nella Smith
Nella’s contribution to the Narrandera community, whilst focussed on environmental themes, has been extensive. From being involved in environmental education and research through the many groups she is currently involved with. If you want to find Nella usually you will find her somewhere in the bush.
Josephine Marks
Josie’s most recent contribution to the Narrandera Community has been as Secretary to both Narrandera CWA Evening Branch and Narrandera Business Group. Her current position at Narrandera TAFE as Services Co-ordinator and now Connected Support Officer supports students, classes and groups in attaining skills and accreditation.
