Narrandera's beloved annual koala count is back for another year of exciting wildlife action! Join us on Saturday, 21 September 2024, for a day of koala-spotting fun at the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve. We will kick things off at 9.30am with a lively registration and briefing at the Muster Point, before splitting into teams, each led by a koala-savvy leader.
This year's Koala Count is part of the fantastic Great Southern Bioblitz Weekend - a trio of nature loving events right here in Narrandera. As you venture into the Reserve, you will use both our trusty data sheets and the iNaturalist app to help track and record our furry friends.
In 2023, our koala crusaders came from all over NSW, with some traveling from Queensland and Victoria! Kids were especially thrilled, reporting they could've spotted koalas all day long.
Our mission? To monitor our koala colony's progress and spread the word about the amazing conservation work that started back in the 1970s. Thanks to those pioneering efforts, we've grown from just 19 relocated koalas to a thriving population today.
With ongoing support from dedicated volunteers, researchers, and the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, we're now tracking 295 koalas with heat-seeking drones and monitoring their chatter from over 70 sound meters.
